Urinary Tract Injury: Avoidance and Management
Occhino JA, Gebhart JB

Despite best efforts, occasional injury to the urinary tract during ObGyn surgery is inevitable. It is important to remain vigilant and aware of the possibility of injury at the time of surgery to better optimize patient outcomes. Lower urinary tract injury is defined as injury to the urethra, urinary bladder, or ureter. Though uncommon, inadvertent injury to these organs may occur during ObGyn procedures. The two most commonly performed surgical procedures in the United States are cesarean delivery and hysterectomy. From years 2000 to 2004, more than 600,000 hysterectomies were performed annually. In 2007, of the more than 4.3 million registered US births, almost 1.4 million (31.8%) were cesarean deliveries.
