Pelvic inflammatory disease is a common cause of acute pelvic pain among sexually experienced adolescent and young adult women. Clinical presentation may vary widely, and the clinician must therefore have a low threshold for evaluating young women for this condition. Outpatient treatment is appropriate for most patients with mild-to-moderate disease severity.
